HVAC Blower Wheels and Axial Fan Blades for OEMs

The Back Bay Associates represents world-class blower wheel manufacturers with domestic (USA) and international production. Their patented aluminum and steel product line includes centrifugal blower wheels, propeller fans, and axial fan blades, ranging from 2″ to 60″, for HVAC, Food Service Equipment, appliances, and refrigerated vending OEMs. As an HVAC components supplier, we can also source the coil and motor around the wheel.

Ducted airflow

Centrifugal and Direct-Drive Blower Wheels

Centrifugal blower wheels handle the static pressure of ducted airflow in furnaces, air handlers, and rooftop units. Bore sizes fit most motor shafts, including metric, for direct-drive applications.

Forward-Curved vs Backward-Curved Blower Wheels

Whichever you choose, the wheel has to overcome the pressure drop of the commercial HVAC coil and the rest of the system.

Residential & light commercial

Forward-curved

Most residential and light commercial HVAC blowers use forward-curved wheels. They move a lot of air at low speed in a compact package, and they run quietly.

Larger commercial equipment

Backward-curved / inclined

Backward-curved or backward-inclined wheels run faster and are more efficient at higher pressures, which is why they show up in larger commercial equipment.

Single-inletDIDW

Wheels also come in single-inlet or double-inlet (DIDW) configurations, depending on how air enters the housing. Our principals can typically supply both types of these wheels in the requested configuration.

Propeller fans

Pitch angle and wing count trade airflow against motor load and noise. A steeper pitch moves more air but demands more torque. For fan shutters, guards and shrouds, see ventilation components.

Fan & Blower FAQ

A blower wheel, also called a squirrel cage or centrifugal wheel, is a cylindrical fan with curved blades. It pulls air in at the center and pushes it outward under pressure; it’s used in furnaces, air handlers, and ducted HVAC systems.

An axial fan moves air parallel to the shaft and is suited to high-volume, low-pressure applications like condensers. A blower wheel moves air outward at a right angle and handles higher static pressure.

An unbalanced wheel vibrates. That causes noise, shortens motor bearing life, and can crack mounts over time.
